The gift I couldn’t give last Christmas

We rush through lists, wrap our stress in pretty paper, and call it joy. But the one thing we’re starving for can’t be bought – our own presence, our own acceptance.

The book that wasn’t ready

Last year, I wanted to create something different. Not another shiny object – but a gentle invitation to slow down. A small reminder for children (and adults) that peace begins in the body, one breath at a time.

But it didn’t happen. Life got in the way, time slipped through my fingers, and yes – I was devastated. The vision I had imagined: parents and children slowing down together, breathing, feeling, reconnecting – a true time of joy and presence.

I thought I was writing the book for my daughter. So she could learn to calm herself when the world felt too big. What I didn’t realize was that the lesson was meant for me too.

No child can stay regulated when their parent is unraveling. And no amount of love can replace the safety of a parent at peace in their own body.

The wake-up call

That realization hit deeper than any deadline. Children don’t learn peace from what we tell them – they learn it from how we live it. From the rhythm of our breath. From how we respond when life doesn’t go as planned. From how we soften instead of snap.

I started seeing how disconnected we’ve become – not just from each other, but from ourselves. Always “on,” always “doing,” always seeking outside what’s already within.

The magic we forget

This is why breathing feels like magic – it brings us back. To our bodies. To this moment. To what truly matters.

When we breathe with our children, something ancient awakens – a shared rhythm, a wordless safety, a remembering. It’s not about teaching them calmness. It’s about becoming the calm they can rest in.

So this year, I’m not chasing perfect. I’m not wrapping pressure in ribbons. I’m returning – to what’s simple, what’s real, what’s alive.

Because the magic of Christmas isn’t what we give. It’s who we are when we give it.

If you feel called to slow down, breathe, and share that magic with the little ones in your life, the story is ready to be discovered. In English and German.
